On 15 December 1908 a passenger train crashed into 38 goods wagons that had become decoupled from a train and rolled back down the track into a tunnel in the south of France. The passenger train derailed and a fire broke out, killing fifteen people. The disaster prompted a debate about euthanasia in France after the driver of the passenger train, unable to be freed from the wreckage, asked to be killed before the flames reached him.
