Bas relief detail of a lion wounded by arrows during a royal lion hunt staged for King Ashurbanipal of Nineveh, Iraq (645 - 640 BC). The arena for these spectacles was a forerunner of the later Roman Imperial arenas where wild animal hunts were also staged. This sculpture shows the hind quarters of the lion paralysed by arrows. It was sculpted on a gypsum panel on the palace wall. British Museum.
