On the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) the 2nd Fusiliers were stationed at Subathu near Simla. Mitchell had been with the regiment in India for less than a year. His regiment was immediately ordered to Ambala where it joined General George Anson?s field force, hastily assembled for the re-conquest of Delhi.
