Grant was a veteran of the campaign in Egypt (1799-1802) and the Peninsular War (1808-1814), serving with the 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot and Portuguese forces. In this portrait he wears the neck badge of a Knight Companion of the Bath.
