Watercolour by Richard Simkin, 1883. Gervase Tinley entered the Army in 1875 and in 1876 joined the 83rd (County of Dublin) Regiment of Foot, serving in India. In 1881, when the 83rd were posted home, he transferred to the 1st (Bombay) Light Cavalry (Lancers), preferring a chance of active service in India. He served on the North West Frontier in the Zhob Valley Expedition of 1884 and in Burma from 1885 to 1889. In 1887, he led a detachment against a gang of dacoits and, after skirmishing, routed the enemy. Mentioned in despatches, Tinley was praised in \'The London Gazette\' in 1887 as \'a very good cavalry officer, who has on every occasion done well in the field?.); by National Army Museum .
