Illustration of American orthopaedic surgeon Augustus A. White (born 1936). White was born in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, and graduated from Mount Herman School in Massachusetts, USA, in 1957. After high school, he attended Brown University and completed his pre-medical studies in 1957. Later, White enrolled at Stanford Medical School to study Medicine. In 1961, he became the first African American medical student to graduate from the medical school. Augustus was also the first African American surgical resident at Yale New Haven Hospital, Connecticut, USA. White later returned to Harvard Medical School and was Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Ellen and Melvin Gordon Professor of Medical Education. He also served as Chief of the Orthopedic Surgery Department at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
