1894 illustration of Verney Lovett Cameron (1844-94), British explorer. Cameron joined the British Navy in 1857 and was sent to Africa on a Royal Geographical Society expedition in 1873. This was the second attempt to reach the Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone. However after landing in Zanzibar, Tanzania, Cameron met servants carrying Livingstone's body. Carrying on, Cameron became the first European to cross tropical Africa from East to West when he reached the Atlantic Ocean in 1875. He discovered some of Livingstone's papers and explored the southern half of Lake Tanganyika on this trip. Artwork by Paul Gaffard published in the book 'La Conquete de l'Afrique' (1894).
