U.S. Marines Fight in The Marshalls - U.S. Marines set up a communications unit in the ruins of a Japanese building shortly after American forces stormed ashore on Namur Island in the Kwajalein Atoll on Jan. 31, 1944. Namur was one of the first islands captured by U.S. forces in the amphibious operations which led to the seizure of Kwajalein, the largest atoll in the Marshall Islands of the Central Pacific. The U.S. Navy announced that American troops killed 8,122 Japanese and took 264 prisoners during this action. November 26, 1945. (Photo by War Pool Photo).
