A 76-year-old miner Bob Simms from Lightning Ridge travelled nearly 500 miles to present an opal to mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary, who left for New Zealand by Teal today. Simms, seen here with Sir Edmund Hillary at Mascot, presented him with a blue opal Simms mined himself. "I left Lightning Ridge last Saturday and got," Simms said today. "Last time Sir Edmund came through Sydney I also made a special trip to see him," he added. July 13, 1954.
