The Mount Everest Expedition: "The Times" Service -- Scenery of the great Rongbuk Glacier of Mount Everest. Surrounding Everest is one of the finest mountain massifs of the world with huge unnamed peaks and vast winding glaciers. The great sugar loaf of Pumori with hanging glaciers on its almost precipitous slopes has been named by the expedition's surveyors. A fine mountain, but not so high, is the Island peak standing in the centre of the main Roncituk glacier. The peak is beautifully fluted and often avalanches of snow and ice sweep down to the glacier basin below. The glacier in the main valley contains wonderful ice pinnacles enclosing glacial lakes of deep emerald water. July 11, 1924.
