Painting Exhibition - Sir John Rothenstein and his daughter Lucy at the Nicholson preview. At London's Tate Gallery the Contemporary Art Society are exhibiting 86 works by 61-year-old abstract painter Ben Nicholson. One of them is of London fashion model Anne Cox. But when she gazed at the completed work she said "I am mystified, I fail to see any connection to myself". The only tie-up Miss Cox was able to discover was a vermilion shape. "I imagine it signifies my lips" she said "because Mr. Nicholson made me wear vermilion lipstick during the sittings,". June 15, 1955. (Photo by Evening Standard)
