President Chiang Kai-shek (center) is cheered by troops in Nanking, Jan. 16, where he inspected the entire garrison and watched what was called the most spectacular and greatest review of Chinese troops since the end of World War II. The review was among his last official acts before his resignation on Jan. 21, which ended his 22-year rule of China.
