Arles, France - 17 June 2010; No people in view. Arles is a fine old city on the Rh??e River in the Provence region of southern France, with a history extending back to Roman times and even further to Celts and Ligurians around 800 BCE. Here we see its well preserved two-tier Roman Ampitheatre, dating from 90CE. As well as blood sports and gory battles, it was also home to gentler pursuits such as arts, theatre and poetry. The contrasting building is not, as might seem, a church, but the Colle Saint Charles. Note - image from analogue film.
