Great Comet of 1881, illustration. Also known as C/1881 K1, 1881 III, and 1881b, this comet was discovered on 22nd May 1881 by the Australian astronomer John Tebbutt (1834-1916). Comets are icy bodies from the outer solar system that boil and form a bright tail of gas and dust as they approach the Sun. Observed on the night of 25-26 June 1881 at 1:30am. Artwork by French artist and astronomer Etienne Leopold Trouvelot (1827-1895).
