Mycoplasma genitalium, illustration. Identified in 1980, Mycoplasma genitalium is a bacterium of the Mollicutes class that colonises the male and female reproductive tract. It is the smallest free-living cell and, given the small size of its genome (580 kilo bases), was one of the first bacteria to be fully sequenced and the first genome to be chemically synthesised.
