Simulation showing all the hurricanes and tropical storms during the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season (1st May to 31st December). The numbers denote hurricane strength, 'T' denotes a tropical storm. The sea is colour-coded for surface temperature, with blue areas lower than 24 degrees Celsius (C), through green (24C-26C), yellow (26C-27C), orange (27C-28C) and red (28C-29C). During the season there were a record 30 named storms. Five of the hurricanes made landfall in the USA, causing hundreds of deaths and billions of dollars worth of damage. Data from NASA's Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG).
