Nara, Japan - 4 November 1987 ; Kasuga Grand Shrine is a Shinto shrine in the city of Nara, Japan. Established in 768 AD and rebuilt several times over the centuries, it is the shrine of the Fujiwara family. The Temple is famous for its innumerable stone and bronze lanterns which cover the temple grounds. Here we see some in the shady serenity of Nara Park, with two of the famous Nara Deer peeking out at me. According to local folklore, Sika deer from this area were considered sacred due to a visit from Takemikazuchi-no-mikoto, one of the four gods of Kasuga Shrine.
