Italy; Tuscany; Lucca: poster"90th anniversary nonstop trans Atlantic flight Italy - Brazil 1928 - 2018") aside commemorative plaque of pioneer aviator Carlo Del Prete (1897 - 1928) by local sculptor Francesco Petroni (1877 - 1960); The plaque consists of a bronze relief portrait of Carlo Del Prete and on top a console with a bronze eagle. As well; there is an inscription from Divina Comedia of Dante Alighieri and another dedicated to the "aeronaut" Carlo del Prete. Born in Lucca and after having served in the Italian Royal Navy Regia Marina (submarines); in World War I; Del Prete joined the Italian Royal Air Force Regia Aeronautica; in 1923. In 1927; he participated in the famous four continents flight with Francesco de Pinedo and mechanic Vitale Zacchetti; flying the flying boat Santa Maria; a Savoia-Marchetti S 55; from Italy via Africa across the Atlantic Ocean via island of Fernando de Noronha to Natal in Brazil; followed by several stops in Rio de Janeiro; Buenos Aires; Montevideo; Asuncion and crossing the Mato Grosso to reach Manaos. The flight continued to the USA and return to Rome was after 123 days and a total of 46 989 kilometers. In 1928; Del Prete realized several aviation records and went with Arturo Ferrarin in a Savoia-Marchetti S 64 on a nonstop flight to Brazil again. The new world record with an estimated flight distance of officially 7188 km was realized in 48 hours and 14 minutes; on 5th of July; 1928. Del Prete died some days after a crash during a flight show in Rio de Janeiro; on 11th of August; 1928.
