Colors and ink on yellowish mica paper. Covers of dark hardwood; finely carved in flat relief. The eight scholars among trees; painted in the style of Daqian alternating with eight tigers nest to rocks and grass in the style of Shanzi. Presumably the representation refers to the 'Eight Immortals of Huainan '; which are also called bagong (Eight Gentlemen). To the outside on the cover sheets in flat relief the eight horses of the king Mu of the Zhou dynasty. Length 33.8cm; width open 58.5cm. Matching fabric pouch. Condition A/B.
