19th century illustration showing printers using ink and moveable type. Printing with moveable type was pioneered in Europe by Johann Gutenberg in the 1450s, and revolutionised printing and publishing. The moveable type is being sorted at left, while the worker at centre is rolling ink over the plate of type that has been laid out for a single page. In the background at left a sheet of paper is being prepared. In the back room at upper right, a subsidiary process is being carried out. Other processes included preparing the ink, preparing the paper, and binding the pages. Print published in Mainz, Germany.
