IMPORTANT BUDDHA HEAD. SANDSTONE.
Thailand. Early Ayutthaya-period. Late 14th - early 15th c.

Yellowish sandstone with residue of gilding; red and black lacquer. The eyes with original mother of pearl inlays. The long and straight shaped nose blends into elegant eyebrow ridges above half closed expressive eyes. The shape is repeated in the hairline. The ushnisha is two-tiered and like the hairstyle completely covered with half round relief dots depicting the hair of Buddha. The ketumala flame is missing. His slightly smiling lips are surrounded by a fine engraved line and his ears are elongated showing the royal descent of the Buddha. Height 47cm; width 31;5cm; depth 27cm. Condition A/B. Supplement: Mounted on a metal base.
