Eighteen masks; very delicately carved from Japanese maple varieties under careful consideration of the wood grain; the details like hair; eye brows and beards are very carefully engraved. Depicted are; among others; Buddhist deities like ungyo-nio (guard deity with closed mouth); Gigaku masks; No masks; Buddhist deities and Bugaku masks. Sign.: Ryumin saku; according to MCI the carver from the Ono school mentioned by Meinertzhagen under no. 3; who was active in the Meiji period; see p. 677. H. 3;7 - 4;5 cm. Condition A.
