Seawater is fed into the vessel via a pipe in the top; heated from the boiler by superheated steam and passed through a number of perforated sheets; which distribute the water and on which the salt precipitates. The steam is discharged to the steam cabinet via the steam discharge pipe on the side; the purified water is led down to the lower part of the boiler.
