Portrait of Louis XIV (1638-1715); King of France and Navarre; A slightly smaller than life-size portrait of Louis XIV in patinated bronze; on a square red marble base. The face is turned slightly to the right (heraldic left). The monarch wears a contemporary and imposing 'in folio' wig; and an all'antica kuras in Roman style; with the radiant sun - referring to Apollo - half visible from behind the drapery - the monarchic emblem of the Sun King. Two rows of lambrequins and a pleated sleeve are visible at the arm stitches. On the lambrequins are engraved fleurs-de-lys. On the right shoulder; the drapery; which acts as a masking of the breast cut; is held with a rosette-shaped button. The back of the bust is open; with the exception of the back of the head. The whole exhibits a high degree of finish and detail; which demonstrates that the bronze was very carefully modeled in the wax and embossed after casting; Louis XIV (King of France); Martin Desjardins; Paris; c. 1690 - c. 1695 and/or before 1749; bronze (metal); marble (rock); h 53 cm h 39 cm
