Bacchus Finding Ariadne on Naxos Bacchus Discovering Ariadne on Naxos; In a classic room a naked young woman is lying on a canopy bed hung with curtains; slumbering on her left side. She has the hand of the left arm bent upwards above the head and against the headscarf; with the right she supports the pillow she is lying on. From the left comes the naked Bacchus; who lifts the curtain with both hands. He is caught by the arm by a satyr; who lights him with the torch. The satyr is standing on one leg and the other is bent over the bed. Behind him a table with a cloth; on which a vase with flowers; in the architectural background heavy pillars and an arch. On the plinth on which the bed stands; there is an Amor three-quarters to the left. He lifts the bedcloth above the head of the owl; who has put a claw on his knee. In front of the Amor are bow and quiver; more to the left the slipper of the sleeping star. The bed leg in Floris style goes back to a partially covered human body. The curtains have a floral pattern on the outside; they are trimmed with frills; just like the tablecloth; which has a border with tendrils. The pillow with tassels has an edge of tendrils; the hanging bedclothes have an edge with rosettes; (story of) Ariadne and Bacchus; Bacchus finds Ariadne on Naxos; satyr (s) (in general); (story of) Cupid; Amor (Eros)); Adriaen de Vries; Praag (possibly); c. 1611; bronze (metal); h 52.5 cm x w 42.0 cm x t 7.0 cm
