Melbourne turned on sunny Australian beach weather for these 11 migrant girls, who today went for their Reel and Line Medallions for lifesaving at Altona beach. They are from left: Pearl McCallum, Jean McQuarrie, Dianne McIntosh, Kristine Harley, Lynette Allen, Linda Armitage. Kay Stirling, Beverley Wise, Bernadette Mcehan, Margaret ***** and Heather Harley. Their average age is 14 and each holds a Bronze medallion and , according to their instructor, Mr James Byrne, they are ***** capable of rescuing man. The girls met 2? years ago, when they attended herald Learn to Swim campaign lessons. Now they are close friends. Most of the girls are of English descent, and saw very little of the beach before coming to Australia. Now their duties include manning a 30-ft. tower and watching for swimmers in distress: taking part in belt and reel teams; and giving first aid to people who suffer cuts, scratches and sunburn.
