Roos Carr Warrior, wooden carving from Withensea, East Yorkshire. c.1100 - 500 BC. This 'spiritual warrior' made from Yew with quartzite eyes and a removeable phallus was deposited in a waterway, perhaps as an offering to protect an important travel and trade route. Mounted together with a second figure on board a small boat, might also depict a dangerous waterbourne raiding party.
