It remained in the hands of the family via Adam Gordon of Huntly and John Gordon to Sir Thomas Gordon who built the castle at the place of a former peel tower or house; in 1604. Aberdeen city architect John Smith (nickname: Tudor Johnny) redesigned the castle from the 1820s to 1840s. In 1870; the neo-Gothic chapel was added.
