Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a migrating human oral junctional epithelium cell adherent to a dental titanium abutment. This illustrates a cell at the front of the newly forming junctional epithelium. The flat form of the cell supports its adherence to the metallic surface, whereas the numerous filopodia at the cell's periphery allow for cell migration. During the installation of a dental implant, the junctional epithelium will be destroyed and must be regenerated. This is established by cells that migrate from the oral epithelium to the abutment surface and proliferate apically. Magnification: x4,000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
