Bird Painter; Lekythos (Farewell at the Grave); Hamburg; clay; quickly turned; painted (ceramic); alternately fired; cold painting; clay; Total: Height: 25 cm; Diameter: 7.1 cm; ceramic; funerary monument; meander; palmette (ornament); mourning; High Classical (Greek antiquity); In Greek antiquity; all vessels for ointment and perfume oils were called lekyths; today the term is used for this special type of vessel. The white-ground lekythens were placed on graves or were given to the deceased as grave goods. The farewell is depicted at the grave. On the left is a female figure. Her head is lowered; her left arm is stretched out. In front of her there is a two-level base with a longitudinal rectangular grave stele; which is closed by a closed palmette on two massive s-shaped tendrils. To the right follows a young man; dressed in a red coat thrown over his left shoulder and leaning on a knotted staff; the bourgeois staff; which is led under the left shoulder. The upper body is shown frontally; the head turned to the right shoulder. His right arm is supported at the hip; the left arm is hidden in the coat. The young man is shown in the habitus of an Athenian citizen with a coat and a knotted staff. The upper finish is a meandering band between two strong lines. On the shoulder there is a thin tendril ornament. Who are the sitters? Are they relatives; even the deceased himself? There is a discussion about this that is still going on today and cannot be decided here.
