Nurse with child; clay; pressed into the mold; hand modeled; clay; Total: Height: 13 cm; Width: 5;6 cm; Depth: 5;3 cm; ceramics; small sculptures/small sculptures; old woman; late classical (Greek antiquity); early Hellenistic; The terracotta shows a bent old woman with a small child on her left arm. She is clothed with a sleeve chiton; which leaves her forearms free; and a hood. Under the hood her short; curly hair protrudes. The naked child holds on to her neckline with his left arm. The type of the 'old nurse'; who carries a small child in her arms; was created in the 2nd quarter of the 4th century B.C. - obviously under the influence of the Middle Comedy. The older type shows the nurse in heavy robes; the child with a pointed cap and completely wrapped in diapers. The woman wears either a mask or mask-like rigid facial features. In the last quarter of the 4th century BC a second; more realistic type was created: Now a woman bent by the burden of age is depicted; lovingly carrying a naked child. The short hair proves the nurse to be a slave. The striding motif gives this type a certain movement and life; and the child's holding on to it gives warmth and immediacy.
