Statuette of the goddess Isis with the Horus Boy; bronze; cast; bronze; Total: Height: 22.5 cm (with peg); Height: 20.5 cm; Width: 6.3 cm; Depth: 10 cm; Three-dimensional sculptures; small sculptures/small works of art; votive offerings; burial objects; Isis; the mother goddess; Horus; son of Osiris and Isis; antiquity; The goddess Isis enthroned frontally in a tight robe holds the Horus Boy with her left hand. With her right hand she grasps her left breast to give it to him. The head of the goddess adorns the sun disk framed by cow horns. The feet stand on a rectangular base; which ends at the underside in an insert. The goddess Isis received the Horus Boy from her brother husband Osiris. Out of concern for the child; she gave birth to it in the solitude of the Nile swamps; to protect it from her brother Seth's stalking. For the Egyptians; Isis was the goddess of love; mother of God and sun; and queen of the western sky. Isis with the Horus Boy - also known as Isis lactans - is an expression of family protection. The iconography is reminiscent of depictions of Mary with the Child Jesus; thus; some research suggests that the cult of Mary may have developed from the Isis faith; which was widespread up to Christian times.
