Illustration of a DNA-stabilised Ag16 nanocluster (DNA:Ag16NC). This molecule consists of silver atoms (spheres) wrapped in a small DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecule. Such nanoclusters act as fluorophores (fluorescent dyes), chemical compounds that absorb light at a particular wavelength and re-emit it at a higher wavelength. DNA:Ag16NC re-emits light at near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. It has potential for use as a biosensor and in imaging.
