Intestinal metaplasia is a change that occurs in response to inflammation or injury, and may indicate an increased risk of the development of cancer. In this picture, normal gastric glands are seen on the left side of the image, whereas abnormal glands with intestinal metaplasia are on the right side. Intestinal metaplasia is so called because the gastric glands come to resemble intestinal glands with presence of goblet cells (round light blue), darker nuclei, and Paneth cells (bright pink).
