Light micrograph of apocrine metaplasia in a female breast. The circular central structure is a breast gland with apocrine metaplasia (change). The apocrine change is characterized by abundant pink cytoplasm and hobnailing (the little blebs sticking out into the central white space). The rest of the area in the picture is the pink collagen fibres that are found all around the breast gland. Apocrine change is a benign and common finding, and is not considered a risk factor for breast cancer. Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: 400x when printed at 10cm.
