Acute kidney injury (AKI) or acute renal failure (ARF), is an abrupt cessation of kidney function. AKI is seen in more than half of people admitted to the intensive care unit. Gross kidney specimen showing marked pallor of the cortex, contrasting to the darker areas of surviving medullary tissue.
