Poland; city of Poznan (former German: Posen); Archcathedral Basilica St. Peter and St. Paul: main altar; tryptych; built 1512; Poznan Cathedral was built 968 onwards; in Romanesque style; and extended in 14th and 15th century; in Gothic style. Since 1821; it is archcathedral; since 1962 Minor Basilica. After a fire in 1622; the cathedral was restored in Baroque style. After another fire in 1772; it was restored in neo-classical style. After the last fire on 15th of February 1945; due to World War II fightings; the cathedral was restored in Gothic style and reopened; 1956. The cathedral is burial place of eight Polish rulers; including Mieszko I (ca ?930 - 992) and first Polish king Boleslaw Chobry (Boleslaw I the Brave; 967 - 1025). Their mausoleum is the Golden Chapel inside the Poznan cathedral. Most important art work is the main altar; a tryptych from city church of G髍a (former German: Guhrau); made 1512 in a workshop in Wroclaw (former German: Breslau).The middle section of the winged altar shows Holy Virgin Mary with Jesus Christ as a child; and the Saints Barbara and Catherine.
