Trunk of tree horsetail (Calamites) fossilised in Carboniferous sandstone, planted with maritime pine. Diameter 30 cm - length 3 metres - Calamites is a genus of fossil plants of the Sphenophyta group, close to horsetails. Like horsetails, Calamites has articulated stems and sometimes reduced, whorled leaves. The genus lived in the Carboniferous period between 360 and 300 Ma (millions of years ago), Grand Combe, Gard, France
