Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Salpingoeca sp. choanoflagellate from wet soil in the Northern Black Forest National Park, Germany. Choanoflagellates are single-celled flagellate protozoa. They may be free-swimming or attached to a substrate (sessile). Their flagella (not visible here) are used for locomotion and to move food particles towards their characteristic collar, which surrounds the flagella, for ingestion. Choanoflagellates are the closest relatives of animals (metazoans). Magnification: x13,000 when printed at 15cm wide.
