Sutured wounds on a male patient's abdomen after laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication surgery. This is a form of keyhole surgery using endoscopes inserted into the abdomen (laparoscopy). It is used to treat hiatus hernia and/or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It involves strengthening the opening of the diaphragm around the oesophagus (gullet) and wrapping the top of the stomach around the bottom of the oesophagus, reinforcing the sphincter (muscular opening) between the two.
