Satellite image of Storm Daniel that hit Greece on 4 September 2023. The storm originated from a low-pressure system over the Ionian Sea and Greece experienced four days of torrential rainfall, during which this image was captured on 7 September 2023. Central parts of the country received 910 millimetres of rain - an amount that surpasses the typical yearly rainfall. The excessive downpour resulted in flash flooding, particularly in the Thessaly region, causing homes and bridges to collapse, roads and power poles to be destroyed, animals to drown and extensive crop damage. Over 4,250 people had to be evacuated as a result of the flooding. The storm claimed the lives of fifteen people and two others are still missing as of 12 September 2023. After hitting Greece, Storm Daniel then moved toward the coast of Libya on 10 September delivering catastrophic flooding that killed thousands, before dissipating on 11 September 2023.
