The darkling beetle (Lagria hirta) is a member of the Tenebrionidae family. A distinctive looking beetle with a yellowish-brown elytra it is found in a range of habitats from dry sandy soils through to wet grassland meadows and deciduous forests. This species is present throughout Europe, Asia and North Africa. The larvae feed on decaying vegetable matter. Photographed in Somerset, UK, in July.
