Triumphal Chair of Martin, King of Arragon [sic], 1860. This ...magnificent chair, of solid silver...is one of the most carefully-preserved curiosities in the Spanish city of Barcelona. Tradition records it to have been the seat of Don Martin, King of Arragon. This Monarch, when apprised of his succession to the throne of John I., was absent in Sicily, engaged in the suppression of a rebellion which had broken out in that island, where his son and daughter-in-law reigned. After the subjugation of the Sicilians and the re-establishment of his sons authority Don Martin returned to take possession of his newly-acquired kingdom. He landed at Barcelona in the year 1397, and at the splendid festivals given to commemorate his accession the seat before us formed his throne of state. From "Illustrated London News", 1860.
