Ruins of Castle Acre Priory, Norfolk, by R. P. Leitch, from the Royal Academy Exhibition, 1860. Engraving from a painting. The ruins of Castle Acre Priory, in Norfolk, dedicated to SS. Mary, Peter, and Paul, are amongst the most picturesque objects of the kind which survive it as memorials of the piety of our forefathers. It was founded by the Earl of Surrey in 1085, in acknowledgment of the courtesy shown to him in the Abbey of Clugny when on a pilgrimage to Rome. It is seated on the Nar; and the walls originally included twenty-nine acres of ground. A very beautiful painting of these picturesque ruins, by Mr. R Leitch, was in the Royal Academy Exhibition...Mr. Leitch shows himself possessed of a fine eye for the more impressive features of his subject, which he transfers to, canvas with charming effect..From "Illustrated London News", 1860.
