Portrait of Parkes who was a diplomat, envoy, first British Consul General in Shanghai, Envoy Extraordinary, Minister Plenipotentiary, and interpreter with the Foreign Office. Mr. Harry Parkes, owing to his knowledge of the Chinese language and character, as well as for his general ability, intelligence, and activity, has been attached to the suite of the British Plenipotentiary in China, and in that capacity has had his name brought very pointedly before the public, whether as an energetic Commissioner or as a prisoner in the hands of the Chinese.
