This bronze medallion is a decorative accessory from a formal chariot, intended for parades and public appearances. The goddess Athena is depicted as Promachos, with an aegis over her left shoulder, and helm bearing a sculpture of Medusa. Originally the Athena Promachos "Athena who fights in the front line" was a colossal bronze statue of Athena sculpted by Pheidias, which stood between the Propylaea and the Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens.
