Illustration of temperature-sensing areas in a seed. The blue cells sense cold. They suppress germination of the seed in conditions that are too cold for the seedling to survive. The yellow cells detect warming of the surrounding environment. As the environment warms they start to produce growth hormone. Once the amount of growth hormone in the seed reaches a threshold, and other environmental factors are favourable, the seed will germinate.
