Close-up of a black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas) scavenging on the carcass of a young eland (Taurotragus oryx), which had been killed by a lioness. Black-backed jackals are omnivorous, eating almost anything that is available. They usually forage alone or in pairs. Black-backed jackals are efficient hunters of mammals up to the size of scrub hares and springhares and the young of smaller antelopes, when available. Photographed in the dry Auob riverbed of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in Southern Africa.
