Female giant kingfisher (Megaceryle maxima). The speckled chest and chestnut belly indicate that this bird is a female. Males have the chestnut colouration on the chest. Giant kingfishers are shy, solitary birds. They are found in wooded areas near rivers and lakes, or in estuaries, throughout eastern and southern sub-Saharan Africa. They nest in tunnels in riverbanks, and feed on fish, frogs and crabs. They are about the size of a crow, reaching around 45 centimetres long and weighing about 365 grams. Photographed in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa.
