Female common malaria mosquito (Anopheles quadrimaculatus) resting on human skin before taking a blood meal. The adults are known vectors of malaria; females feed on mammalian blood to acquire proteins for egg production, and in doing so can inject malaria parasites. This infects the mammalian host and allows the malaria parasites to complete their life cycle.
